Two people have been killed in a camper-van crash in Waikato.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene around 1.45pm.
The incident happened on State Highway 27.
A white campervan is still lodged in a tree.
Matamata Piako District Council councillor Donna Arnold was at nearby property to the crash site when she heard an "awful sound".
"We thought a tyre had blown out," she has been reported to have said.
The road is closed and diversions are in place at Horrell Rd and the Paeroa-Tahuna roundabout.
NZTA has alerted motorists to expect delays between Te Puninga and Patetonga.
A Fire and Emergency spokeperson confirmed that three fire engines attended the scene.
Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
