A black swan taking a jaunt down Auckland's northern motorway has brought traffic almost to a halt this morning.

The errant bird was spotted wandering down the southbound lanes towards the city just after Greville Rd about 7.30am.

Police have successfully guided the swan on to the motorway shoulder. No birds or people were harmed during the incident.
