Tacks have been found on the Island Bay cycleway, causing a puncture for a cyclist.
The handful of tacks were found outside Island Bay Playcentre on Monday morning.
"They caused an experienced road cyclist to lose control due to 2 punctures in front tyre," Island Bay resident Maria Poynter said on Twitter.
"Luckily school starts tomorrow, not today, or it could have been a child. We picked up what we could see."
The controversial cycleway has a new layout proposed, costing $4.1 million, with a dedicated cycleway between the footpath and the kerb at the same height.
Cars will be once again parked up against the kerb.
The cycleway sparked controversy when it cut parking in 2016 - concerns were raised about safety, the narrowness of the road and the cost.
Work is slated to begin soon.
