One person has died in a car crash on Tarras-Cromwell Rd, Bendigo, in Central Otago.
A police spokesman said it appeared that a car rolled and caught on fire just after 3pm.
Five people were able to escape the car but one person, who was trapped in the vehicle, has died.
One person is understood to have moderate injuries, while four others have minor injuries.
A helicopter was sent to the scene and has taken the person with the most serious injuries to Dunedin Hospital.
The road is closed while emergency services work at the scene and is expected to be so for several hours.
Diversions are in place at Dead Man's Pt and Bells Rd.
The Serious Crash Unit has been notified and will be investigating the cause of the crash.
