A large scrub broke out at south Auckland's Ambury Farm in Mangere Bridge this evening.
Five fire crews were called to the scene at the end of Ambury Rd at 7.15pm, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.
A local resident said he could see a grass fire about the size of a football field.
The fire was close to the farm's campsite and bird hide, he said. The adjoining waterfront is a sanctuary for many thousands of native and migrating birds.
The Fire Service spokeswoman said the blaze was at one stage about 100 by 100 square metres but had since been contained.
Firefighters remained at the scene to dampen down hot spots for fear it could flare up again.
