A five-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car near a major Whangarei intersection.
Sergeant Lance Goulsbro said a car which was travelling on Mill Rd collided with a child.
Police confirmed a 5-year-old boy has died as a result of the accident. The road will be closed for at least another two hours.
The Serious Crash Unit was on its way to survey the scene.
The intersection of Mill Rd and Nixon St has been cordoned off and traffic is being diverted off Mill Rd onto Mercer St and around to Princes St.
A reporter at the scene said there are a number of vehicles and two ambulances outside of the store which was formerly known as Youngs' Dairy.
Police are interviewing witnesses, she said.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, who have not yet been spoken to by police, to call Whangarei police or go into the police station.
