The Crown Range Rd will remain closed until tomorrow after it was blocked by a "significant slip" this morning.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council announced on its Facebook page that a slip was covering one lane at the Chain Bay 5 section of the road and "more could come down".
As a result, the Crown Range Rd has been shut until the site could be made safe and the debris cleared.
A QLDC spokesman told the Otago Daily Times the road would remain closed until tomorrow afternoon.
About 300 cubic metres of material came down in the slip, the spokesman said.
It was closed at the state highway turnoff on the Queenstown side and Cardrona on the Wanaka side.
Motorists were advised to use State Highway 6 if they needed to get between Queenstown and Wanaka.
There is no timeframe yet as to when the road will reopen, but the council said it would update the situation as it developed.
