A large landslide has closed State Highway 25A in Coromandel tonight.

Police say the Kopu-Hikuai Road, a major thoroughfare for holiday makers travelling to many popular holiday spots on the Coromandel Peninsula, is closed in both directions.

The landslide, which is approximately 50 metres wide and blocking both lanes, occurred near Kitahi Road, close to the summit.

Police say it could take until the morning to clear the slip and traffic control will remain in place over this time.

The slip comes as many families will be heading home at the end of the school holidays.
