A fire at a downtown Auckland high rise has been contained.

A Northern Fire Service communications spokesman said eight crews - about 30 fire fighters
in total - were at the scene at Ballantynes House at 101 Customs St East about 3.30pm.

St John ambulance staff were there treating a construction worker for smoke inhalation, the Fire Service spokesman said.

The fire is on the ground floor of the 15-storey building, near the Britomart precinct, is used as an office block. The spokesman said the blaze is now contained.

Police confirmed they have been called to assist the fire service with the fire.

"Police will be assisting with cordons for traffic, we don't have any more information on the fire itself at this stage," a spokeswoman said.
