Teachers are set to be stung with an increase in their annual registration fee from $70 to about $170.
The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (Educanz) will shortly consult with unions and the education sector on the proposed fee increase.
Council chief executive Dr Graham Stoop revealed the proposed fee hike to Parliament's education committee today.
He acknowledged it was significant, but was the first since 2010 and was needed to cover the expanded functions of the council.
The proposed fee of about $170 was also reasonable compared to other professions, Stoop said.
He stressed the proposed $100 increase could change after consultation with the sector.
That amount had been settled on after modelling from Deloitte, and the council would also consult on an annual CPI-linked increase to the fee.
Education Minister Hekia Parata in November announced the Education Council would get $21 million to keep it afloat until it could raise money through registration fees.
The council, formerly known as the New Zealand Teachers Council, was established in 2015 and has a wider remit than its predecessor.
The new registration fees will be charged to raise money when the council's transitional funding runs out in mid 2019.
