One person has been seriously injured in a crash in Christchurch and motorists are being warned to avoid the area.

Emergency services were called to Marshland Rd, near the intersection of Lower Sytx Rd late this afternoon.

A car and truck collided and the truck had rolled.

About 4.30pm, police said they were at the scene and were encouraging motorists in the area to avoid the route if possible.

"It will be some time before the crash site has been cleared,'' police said.

People in the area were asked to use alternative routes including Main North Rd.

The detours in place were Prestons Rd to Main North Rd for north-bound traffic and Belfast Rd on to Main North Rd for south-bound motorists.
