Four youths have been arrested after an alleged attack which left an 18-year-old German tourist terrified.
Kerikeri Senior Sergeant Peter Robinson said the German tourist was staying with another tourist in a campervan behind the Kawakawa post shop when four young people allegedly stole a backpack from the campervan just before midnight on Monday.
When the woman recovered the backpack she was allegedly physically assaulted before members of the public intervened.
Four young people have been arrested in relation to the attack.
A 16-year-old girl appeared in Kaikohe Youth Court yesterday charged with assault with intent to injure and demands with menace. Three 13-year-olds, two males and a female, were referred to youth aid.
"We're really pleased to be able to take action and ongoing support is being offered to the victim," Mr Robinson said.
He said the woman suffered facial injuries as a result of being punched in the face and labelled the attack disappointing.
"Police are always disappointed when this type of unprovoked attack happens as it may deter other tourists who want to visit Northland," he said.
Police said they extended their thoughts to the victim, who had been left terrified by the ordeal.
