A 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Hagley Park last night.

Christchurch Police are investigating after the assault in Christchurch.

They were alerted by hospital staff at 9pm after the girl reported the attack to them. She said it happened sometime between 3.30pm and 8.25pm.

The victim was wearing her school uniform, a white short-sleeved shirt and a short skirt.

The alleged offender is described as a very tall male part-Maori, of medium build with tattoos on both arms. He was wearing black pants and a black hoodie.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen or spoken to the girl or the alleged offender at Hagley Park near Christchurch Hospital.

"With daylight hours getting longer and more people taking advantage of the warmer weather, police would like to remind people to always consider their safety when out and about," they said.

"Stick to well-lit areas and routes that are well used."
