An Auckland woman awoke in horror to find an intruder lying on top of her in her Avondale home.
Police are investigating the incident in the Rosebank area of the suburb yesterday morning.
A man entered the 28-year-old woman's home about 7am, police said.
She woke up to find the man on top of her. He then fled the property.
Detective Senior Sergeant Marcia Murray of Avondale police said the incident was "very distressing" for the victim and police were continuing to give her support.
"Police have spoken to the victim, a scene examination was completed yesterday and evidence has been seized for forensic examination," she said.
"Our area inquiries are ongoing and we want to speak to anyone that saw any suspicious activity in the Rosebank area yesterday morning between 5.30am and 7am."
Police are advising residents to be vigilant and ensure their properties are secure and to report any suspicious activity.
