Two people have been taken to hospital after vans collided on State Highway 1 north of Dunedin, causing delays.

The collision occurred at the intersection with Coast Rd and resulted in both vehicles rolling.

A spokesman for St John said the two taken to hospital suffered moderate injuries.

Sergeant Graeme Evans, of Dunedin, would not comment on whether speed was factor, but said it did not appear that alcohol was involved.

The investigation was ongoing.

A reporter at the scene said SH1 was closed to one lane and traffic was delayed this afternoon.
