Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae has been discharged from hospital after undergoing heart surgery.
Government House said in a statement this morning that Sir Jerry left hospital yesterday and was now recovering at his official residence in Wellington.
He had valve replacement surgery last week after a heart problem was picked up during a routine check in October.
Administrator of the Government Dame Sian Elias has taken over Sir Jerry's duties until mid-December. Government House said he would not be doing any community engagements until the New Year.
Sir Jerry said in the statement: "I want to thank the medical staff who have taken such good care of me over the last few days and the people who have sent their expressions of support.
"I am looking forward to undertaking engagements again sometime in the New Year".
