Police are searching a Christchurch house today after a man was shot in the leg.

The man, in his 20s, was admitted to Christchurch Hospital about 5.30am because of a gunshot wound, police said.

Canterbury Police have since executed a search warrant at a residential Linwood address in relation to the incident.

Acting Detective Sergeant Damon Wells said no firearms had been found at the address where the man allegedly was at the time of the incident.

"He was conscious and is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his leg," he said.

"Police are currently piecing together the movements of the man prior to his injury."

Mr Wells said police would not speculate on the circumstances that led to the injury.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have heard a gunshot before 5.30am to call Christchurch Central Police Station on 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
