A motorcyclist has died after slamming into the side of a car in Wellington today.
Earlier, a piece of plastic pipe was used to try and save his life. The man was not breathing after the accident on Happy Valley Rd around 11am.
Adam Moss, 15, was doing work experience at mini golf course Carlucci Land nearby when he heard the crash.
"I heard some skidding along the road, then a big bang when the motorcycle hit the car. Then I heard some people screaming - there were some witnesses here that saw it happen."
The young man rushed to the scene of the accident, to find a motorcyclist had hit the driver's door of a white station wagon as the car turned into the minigolf course.
"He was in a bad way, It looked like his jaw might have been broken and his face was quite stuffed up."
Fortunately, a doctor who had been playing minigolf was at the scene, Mr Moss said.
"I went and got a first aid kit and then he asked for a tube because the motorcyclist wasn't breathing."
Mr Moss rushed back to the golf course, knowing exactly where to find a piece of tube, and when he returned within a minute, it was stuck down the motorcyclist's throat to clear his airway.
"The doctor said that's probably what saved his life."
Mr Moss said the family in the car was a husband, wife and with their two kids, a boy and girl aged between about 8 and 10. They had been turning in to the minigolf course.
"The kids were pretty shaken up and quite upset," he said.
Senior Sergeant Braydon Lenihan of the Wellington District Command Centre said the speed limit where the accident occurred was 70km/h.
He said the preliminary investigation indicated that speed was a factor in the collision, but the serious crash unit would determine its exact cause.
Police said the name of the deceased is not being released at this time until all family members are advised.
