An earthquake has struck the North Island's east coast this morning, just after 5am.
The 4.5 magnitude jolt was 20 kilometres north west of Tolaga Bay, north of Gisborne, at 5.04.
GeoNet reports the quake was of "strong" intensity and people commenting on its Facebook page say they were woken by it.
"Woke me up in Gizzy," said one. "Well that's me awake," said another.
It follows a 4.4 magnitude jolt in Wellington last night.
That quake, at 10.44pm, was centred 30 km east of the city at a debt of 14km. Its intensity was also categorised as "strong".
There are no reports of damage from either quake.
People were also quick to take to social media about that jolt.
