A car was heard speeding in Mt Roskill before it crashed in to two parked cars, killing one person.
Police said residents on Farrelly Ave in the Auckland suburb of Mt Roskill reported the crash around 1.30am. One of the cars also hit a tree.
Senior Sergeant Matthew Knowsley said indications were that speed was a factor in the crash.
"At this stage it appears that speed was a major contributing factor and alcohol is under consideration also."
Mr Knowsley said four people were in the car, and two others were seriously injured. One was taken to Auckland Hospital.
"Reports are the car was speeding and could be heard," he said.
One resident on the street said his wife had applied to the council for speed bumps to be put on the road, which is a long, straight stretch of road.
