A Hawke's Bay man escaped serious injury after his vehicle was shot at on the side of the road on Friday night.
The man, who works as a commercial cleaner, had pulled off the road on the HB Expressway near the intersection with Links Rd for a sleep. He was abruptly woken around 11.30pm when two shots were fired at the back of his stationwagon.
The shots went through the back window and a back panel, narrowly missing him, police said in a statement today.
Detective Sergeant Jason Crowe said it was not known if the person who fired the shots was in a vehicle or on foot.
"There is a possibility this person could have been a hunter shooting possums or rabbits in the area. We can't say for sure at this stage so we are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the incident on the expressway or who may have been out shooting in the Pakowhai area on Friday night.
"While he was not physically injured, the man was understandably very shaken by the experience. We are hoping someone can shed some light on what the circumstances were and if it was accidental or intentional," Mr Crowe said.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Mr Crowe at HB Police on 06 8310700 or information can be left anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
