Police are warning motorists in Otago and Southland to be careful in icy conditions this morning after overnight snowfalls.

Police said snow had settled in the hill suburbs in Dunedin and some streets were affected by black ice, causing several crashes this morning.

Snow has settled in the hill suburbs in Dunedin and a number of streets around Dunedin city are affected by black ice.

Police advised residents not to take unnecessary trips in areas affected by snow and ice, and if travelling to drive to the road conditions.
