A mother and daughter have been rescued from near Mount Taranaki after they became stuck during a tramp.
Police received a phone call from the woman's husband at 4.40pm today who had spoken to her by cellphone.
The woman and her 12-year-old daughter had been tramping in the Poukai Ranges, near Mount Taranaki, when they became stuck due to icy conditions.
As she was carrying a cell phone, the woman managed to contact her husband when she was within coverage.
Using an application, police were able to send a message to the woman's cellphone which gave them her exact location.
Taranaki Police Search and Rescue were called out and the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter was able to fly to the exact area and pick up the duo who were then taken back to Taranaki Rescue Base.
Both were tired and an ambulance was sent to assess the daughter, due to her being very cold. They had been carrying good quality equipment and were prepared for the conditions, police said.
While the cellphone had been handy on this occasion, police advice that a personal locator beacon is the wisest piece of equipment to take on a tramp.
They are considered more reliable as they work using satellite signals and cellphone reception is usually non-existent in mountain areas.
