Police are ramping up efforts to find out more about the death of a man at a commercial property in Oamaru last night.
The identity of the 47-year-old man is not being released at this stage, police said.
About 15 investigators were working alongside forensic experts and ESR scientists to establish the movements and cause of death.
A scene examination was underway and police were working on recovering the dead man from the address.
He will then be transported to Christchurch for a post mortem examination.
Southern Police said they were keeping an "open mind" about the cause and it was currently being investigated as unexplained.
An investigator has been appointed to liaise with the next of kin and the victim support agency has been working to assist the family, they said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Southern Police on (03) 471 5002 or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
