The hunt is still on for a missing police search dog in Wairarapa bush.
The 3-year-old sable-coloured German Shepherd, called Thames, went missing yesterday afternoon in the Mt Holdsworth area during a team training exercise.
He was last seen in the Totara Creek/Red Creek area when he became separated from his handler.
The Wairarapa SAR team stayed in the bush overnight and were joined today by the Wellington Police SAR squad.
Senior Sergeant Mark Davidson said the fitness and resilience of Thames would help him cope with the conditions.
There were a number of very experienced people looking for him, he said.
"Searchers, including his handler, are combing tracks and gullies and calling out for Thames. We're hopeful he's making his way out.
"We've got some kind hearted people checking public access roads and keeping an eye out for Thames. It's important however that only specialist searchers are checking the bush."
Trampers, outdoor enthusiasts and people living in the rural community are asked to let police know if they spot the missing dog.
If spotted or found you can contact the Wellington Police District Command Centre on 04 496 3473.
