After a lengthy delay the Ministry of Health has a permanent appointment to the role of its director general.
Chai Chuah has been confirmed as director general and chief executive of the ministry.
Mr Chuah, a qualified chartered accountant, has been acting in the role since November 2013.
State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie said he was pleased to appoint Mr Chuah as permanent head of the ministry, on a five-year contract.
"During his many years in the health sector Chai has led a number of national health projects," Mr Rennie said.
"Mr Chuah has a lot of experience in building relationships between the ministry and key stakeholders."
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation hailed the appointment as "good news for the health sector".
"Mr Chuah brings continuity and stability in leadership and a wealth of experience from his many previous roles in health," chief executive Memo Musa said.
"We are pleased to be able to continue our good working relationship with him and commend him for his ongoing interest and attention to matters of importance to nurses and the nursing profession.
"Especially at this time, when our health system is facing significant changes, it is welcome news to hear of such a positive appointment."
