The New Zealand-born man of Chinese-Malaysian heritage has not been seen since he ran away from friends on Lincoln Rd in Henderson, west Auckland.
Mr Tan is 1.75m tall, has long black hair and was last seen wearing maroon skinny jeans, a navy cable-knit jumper, Chuck Taylor shoes and prescription glasses.
Police and search and rescue searched the bush areas around Waitakere Hospital, Henderson Creek, Central Park Drive and Tui Glen Reserve.
Mr Tan's sister Cindy Tan said her brother was internationally known for his paintings of New Zealand's wilderness and suburbia.
Family and friends have been looking at the paintings for clues as to his whereabouts, Ms Tan said.
Police asked anyone with information or anyone who might have seen Mr Tan should contact the Henderson Police on 09 839 0600.
