A pedestrian has been hit by a train and killed in Te Kuiti.
Police and ambulance are at the scene. The person was struck as the train passed through the Waikato town at about 6pm.
In a statement, police said they were providing support to the victim's family at this time.
"Police are continuing their initial enquires and as this is an on-going situation, there are no further details that can be provided at this time," a spokesperson said.
The railway line will be closed until further notice.
St John spokesman Mark Tregoweth told the Herald two people were hit by the train.
Paramedics arrived at the scene at 6.10pm and transported one moderately injured patient to Te Kuiti Hospital's Emergency Department.
The other patient had minor injuries and was treated and discharged at the scene, he said.
