A 50-year-old Turangi man has been charged with two counts of wounding with intent following an incident in the town last night that left two police officers with deep lacerations to their hands.
The man will appear at Rotorua District Court later today.
Police were notified just after 4pm yesterday of concerns for the welfare of a man from the Taupo district.
Attempts to locate the man continued throughout the evening, and he was finally located at about 10pm in Turangi.
Police said the man appeared distressed and did not respond to the officers who were attempting to negotiate with him to get out of the vehicle.
Police said the officers feared for the man's immediate safety and tried to assist him from the vehicle.
As two officers approached the man they were allegedly attacked with a knife.
While restraining the man, the officers both received deep knife cuts to their hands.
They were taken to Taupo Hospital for treatment. They required stitches and are now recovering at home.
