Police would like to speak with a "good samaritan" who followed an alleged armed bank robber as he fled in Auckland today.
A man, armed with a nailgun entered the Kiwibank in Sunnynook just after 1pm, police spokeswoman Beth Bates said. He pointed the nailgun at the teller and demanded money. When it was handed over he left the bank.
No-one was injured in the incident.
A staff member chased the man and flagged down a passing motorist, who was driving on nearby Cockayne Avenue, Ms Bates said.
The man and the "good samaritan" attempted to follow the man as he ran away.
They lost sight of him but several minutes later saw a man fitting the offender's description getting into a vehicle.
Police would like to speak with the driver who was flagged down and helped, and were encouraging the person to get in touch, Ms Bates said.
The robber was described by police as Maori or Pacific Islander, aged in his 20s to 30s.
He was wearing black wrap-around sunglasses, a black hoody and a black sleeveless puffer vest, dark pants and black sneakers with white trim.
