A man has life-threatening injuries after a near drowning in Lake Taupo.
St John Ambulance communications team manager Norm Ngatai said emergency services were called at 2.30pm today to a boat at Whakamoenga Point.
Mr Ngatai said it was believed the adult male had hit his head on an object in the water, lost consciousness and had started to drown.
He was pulled from the water by his friends onboard.
"From the information we have, he went into cardiac arrest onboard," Mr Ngatai said.
Police said the boat made it to shore where an overseas tourist performed first aid on him.
The man was taken to Taupo Hospital in a critical condition.
Taupo Police are investigating the incident.
