Kawakawa firefighters turned animal rescuers when they were called on to pull a cow out of deep mud.
Fire chief Wayne Martin said the brigade was called to a lifestyle block on Doel Rd about 8pm on Saturday where a cow was stuck up to its belly in mud.
Using strops, manpower and a tractor they eventually pulled it free.
Mr Martin said the cow appeared unhurt but needed to sit down for a while to recover from its ordeal.
