Two teenagers are in a serious condition following a two-car head-on collision near Whangarei which also put two others in hospital.
The crash occurred just before 9.30 on Whangarei Heads Rd near Taraunui Rd, Parua Bay, about 20 km East of Whangarei.
St John ambulance communications team manager Norm Ngatai said the two patients who sustained serious injuries were teenagers.
One was a female in her late teens and the other a male in his early teens, he said.
Another patient suffered moderate injuries while one sustained minor injuries.
All four were transported to Whangarei Base Hospital.
Fire northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said fire fighters were called to the scene after reports of trapped persons.
However, on arrival it was found that all people were clear of the scene and had been accounted for, Mr Phillips said.
Police northern communications shift Inspector Andy Brill said the circumstances which led to the crash were unclear.
The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene.
