A man who shot at targets with an air rifle at a popular west Auckland beach has been arrested.
Police were alerted to the incident between Cornwallis Beach and Mill Bay about 2pm today, Inspector Lou Alofa of police northern communications said.
"A male was reported in by members of the public to be shooting an air rifle towards a rock face and targets,'' Mr Alofa said.
By the time officers arrived, the man had fled in a car, but police put cordons in place.
"We were able to find and stop the vehicle, and the male has been taken into custody. We have also recovered an air rifle from his vehicle.''
The man was being questioned by police and charges were being considered.
Mr Alofa said nobody was reported injured.
Cornwallis Regional Park, in the Waitakere Ranges, is described by the council as "a popular, safe spot for family picnics and swimming''.
