Rotorua police have confirmed a motorcyclist has died as a result of a collision with a car north of Rotorua.
The crash happened about 5pm yesterday on Ngongotaha Rd, about 10km north of Rotorua.
Senior Constable Grant Keys said a motorcycle collided with a turning car.
"It is saddening that with all the media attention given to motorists around speeding and the effects of speed, and also around the importance of motorists having patience at intersections, that we continue to have crashes due to these very factors."
The motorcyclist died at the scene.
No names are being released as yet while police continue to make inquires into finding the next of kin and family members.
A passenger in the car also required hospital treatment, with minor injuries.
Keys said Rotorua police were very clear in their message to motorists.
"The faster you go the greater the chances of having a crash, and as a result the impacts are more severe."
Likewise, he said Bay of Plenty police were strong on enforcing the traffic legislation in relation to drivers failing to give way, and impulse decisions they might later regret.
"We urge all motorists to take care while driving and to have patience while driving."
Rotorua police are also seeking information from a motorist who may have been overtaken by the motorcyclist who was travelling south at the time and just before to the crash happened.
Anyone with information relevant to this investigation was asked to contact the police.
