Prime Minister John Key has placed his bet on the Melbourne Cup, selecting Drunken Sailor to place as a jibe at his rival.
The choice refers to the nickname Mr Key gave to Phil Goff during last night's leaders' debate, accusing him of spending "like a Drunken Sailor."
He said if the $20 bet came in he would donate the winnings to Labour's finance spokesman David Cunliffe.
"So that if (Labour) wins they'll only be $16.5 billion short over the next few years."
National has claimed Labour's policies will require an extra $17 billion debt.
Mr Key said he was hopeful Drunken Sailor would only come second.
He placed a bet to win on Niwot.
Mr Key placed his bet at a TAB near Hamilton after visiting the Te Rapa bypass construction site this morning.
He will announce the party's welfare policy this afternoon.
