An argument between two hitchhiking men near Queenstown today allegedly led to one trying to stab the other.
The men, both in their 20s, had been trying to hitchhike back to Dunedin, on State Highway 6 near Lake Hayes, when an argument erupted and their fight spilled onto the road, Sergeant Blair Duffy said.
One man allegedly tried to stab the other with a kitchen steak knife, he said.
The first officer at the scene, armed with a Glock 9mm pistol, asked the man to surrender. He did so without incident and the knife had been recovered, Mr Duffy said.
The men knew each other.
No one was injured and no shots fired, he said.
A 22-year-old Dunedin man had been charged with assault with intent to injure, possession of a knife and possession of cannabis.
He was to appear at Queenstown District Court on Monday.
