The Buller District is the luckiest place to buy lottery tickets - thanks largely to one massive win.
The average winnings per person from Lotto and Big Wednesday contests for Buller's 9700 residents is $1184.96, more than $1000 ahead of the next best, Wanganui with $169.52.
The huge average was largely due to a $10.6 million Big Wednesday prize won in Reefton in September.
Buller also topped the average winnings per capita in 2008, NZ Lotteries chief executive Todd McLeay said.
Manukau Pak 'N' Save sold the most prizes (78,000), ahead of Hornby Mall Lotto in Christchurch and Manukau City Lotto.
