Niwa principal scientist Simon Thrush has been awarded this year's New Zealand Marine Science Award for his international contribution to estuarine and coastal studies.
President of the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society Colin McLay said Dr Thrush had published more than 170 papers.
"His expertise is in demand worldwide, but he still has the time to mentor and foster the work of young New Zealand scientists who are our future."
