A Tokoroa driver who failed to stop after hitting a car at an intersection last night then crashed into an ambulance while on the wrong side of the road, badly damaging the ambulance and his own car, police said.
The 45-year-old man shunted the first car out of the way so he could drive on, then crashed head-on into the ambulance at a roundabout.
The ambulance driver was uninjured, and treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries.
The ambulance and car had to be towed away.
The driver and passenger from the first accident were not injured.
Alcohol and speed were involved in both accidents, and charges were likely to be laid against the man, police said.
