More than 100 people stood outside the Auckland District Court while about 10 firemen from two engines inspected the building, after the court was evacuated this morning.
Fire officers and construction workers collected brown water using a pipe stretching from near the elevators' ceiling into wheelie bins and tipped them on to Albert Street.
A police officer on the scene said he did not know what the cause was, but he knew a fire alarm had gone off inside the building.
The fire service left the scene at 12.13pm and evacuated people were allowed back inside.
The service's northern communications centre said it had not received any information about the incident yet.
