Police suspect the fire that tore through Levin's KFC this morning was deliberately lit.
The restaurant, in the town's main street, was well alight when firefighters arrived just after 2am.
Four appliances were needed to fight the fire, which caused substantial damage.
This morning police said they suspected that the blaze, which began outside the building, was deliberate.
No one was in the building at the time and no-one was injured.
Officers would be scouring local security footage for anything which might help the investigation, central communications manager Kim Perks said.
