A 4.5 magnitude earthquake shook Southland tonight, part of a continuing series of aftershocks following a 7.8 magnitude quake in the region last week.
Tonight's quake was at a depth of 5km, and was 100km west of Tuatapere. It hit at 7.04pm, GNS Science said.
Last night a 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook the region shortly before 9pm.
More than 100 aftershocks have hit the area after a 7.8 magnitude quake last Wednesday - the largest recorded in the world this year.
