A section of State Highway 25 through Waihi is closed due to a large hole in the road.
Land Transport Agency says the hole is the size of a ute and is between 1.5-2 metres deep.
Police have closed the highway from Clarke St to Seddon St, and diversions are in place.
State highway manager Kaye Clark says there has been a broken watermain in the area, but they are not sure if that caused the road to give way. She says they plan to fill up the hole and put some speed controls in place so people can use the road over the weekend.
