MetService reports that State Highway 1 through the Desert Rd in the central North Island has been cleared following sleet and snow showers.
More snow is expected at the summit of the Lindis Pass this afternoon and tomorrow.
Rain is expected on the Milford Road from late this morning, with snow above 600 metres. Up to eight centimetres may accumulate near the tunnel with lesser amounts at lower levels.
The snow is expected to clear from the tunnel late in the afternoon, but a few snow showers are possible further south with the snow level gradually lowering to about 300 metres south of Lake Gunn.
Snow showers are expected to become frequent and heavier tomorrow, especially south of Lake Gunn.
Rain is expected at Arthurs Pass and Porters Pass this afternoon and snow showers are expected tomorrow.
