The Easter weekend road toll has risen to six with the death of a motorcyclist in hospital overnight.
The crash happened on State Highway 75 between Christchurch and Akaroa at 2pm yesterday.
Five others were killed on the roads within 24 hours on Thursday and Friday.
Road Policing Manager Superintendent Paula Rose said the situation was disappointing.
"Given that between Friday and yesterday there was only one road death, we're pleased about that. It could have been so much worse because we had some pretty dreadful driving out there."
Last year, nine people were killed on the roads at Easter.
