A woman is recovering in hospital after being hit by an unmarked police car during a high-speed chase involving a speeding moped in Christchurch.
Inspector Gary Knowles said the police car was following a moped at speed west along Armagh Street in Christchurch, when he turned his siren on and entered the Durham Street North intersection.
"He has then struck a member of the public driving an SUV (sports utility vehicle)," Mr Knowles said.
"The SUV has rolled and ended up crashing through a business premises window. The 40-year-old female driver has been taken to Christchurch Hospital. Her injuries are not life threatening and she is currently being interviewed by a member of the police."
The officer driving the unmarked car had returned to the station where he was interviewed.
Police have spoken with a number of witnesses at the scene to establish exactly what has taken place, Mr Knowles said.
A specialist crash team were currently coordinating the scene investigation, and a non-commissioned officer had been assigned to coordinate an Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) investigation.
