KEY POINTS:
A pedestrian was hit and killed by a motorist on Christchurch's Fendalton Rd early this morning.
Police said the incident happened about 10 minutes after midnight.
"The offending car and driver have been located and the driver is assisting police with their enquiries," a police spokesman said.
St John Ambulance spokesman Ian Henderson said the victim was a woman, who was initially taken to hospital in a critical condition.
It was a busy night in the Christchurch region for emergency services, who also attended a serious crash at Kaiapoi, north of the city, soon after 10pm where a man was seriously injured and had to be cut from his vehicle.
About the same time as the Fendalton Rd incident a man was also struck and seriously injured by a vehicle on Stevens St in the city.
