KEY POINTS:
Police are combing the streets of Christchurch after a report of a man pointing a handgun at a member of the public this afternoon.
Inspector Alan Weston, of the police southern communications centre, said the alleged gunman was aged between 50 and 60, balding and carrying a blue suitcase in the incident in Gloucester St near Fitzgerald Ave about 2pm.
No shots were fired and he wasn't known to the person who called police.
Police units rushed to the area, but Mr Weston told NZPA the man seemed to have disappeared.
Inquiries were continuing.
"Obviously we're concerned that someone's reported to be wandering around with a firearm. It's just strange that we haven't had any more reports," he said.
