Auckland police are looking for a man whose attempt to rob an Epsom antique store was foiled by its owner yesterday.
The man walked into Antiques on Manukau about 2.20 pm with a pistol, which was later found to be
a fake.
He pointed the pistol at the shopkeeper, opened a pillowcase he was carrying and told the owner to fill it with gold jewellery.
The owner placed a tray of jewellery in the pillowcase, then walked around the counter and confronted the man. As the two wrestled, the owner pulled the gun off the man and the offender dropped the pillowcase and fled.
No property was stolen.
The man was seen running along Manukau Rd and getting into a yellow Mitsubishi car.
The gun is an imitation or toy pistol, black with white paint flaking from the muzzle and other areas.
Detective Constable Andy King said the store owner suffered grazes and slight bruising to his face during the incident.
The man is described as a male Pakeha, aged in his 20s, with long blond hair tied back, although this could be a wig. He is about 1.8m tall and of medium build.
Detective Constable King urged anyone who saw the incident, or who may have any information, to contact him at the Auckland Central crime squad on (09) 302-6789.
AUCKLAND CITY
Auckland police have issued sketches of two men who robbed Mansor's Jewellers in the BNZ Tower in Queen St at 1.30 pm on Tuesday.
The pair, armed with a shotgun and a tomahawk and with their faces hidden by sweatshirts, ran out of the shop with about $50,000 worth of Rolex watches.
The men went to the rear of the building in Mills Lane, where they escaped in a white 1989 Mazda Familia hatchback stolen from St Heliers the night before.
The car was found parked in Durham St West about 6 1/2 hours after the robbery.
Anybody with information about the raid can contact Auckland Central police on (09) 302-6400.
PAEROA
Paeroa police are anxious to find the owner of two bronze statues believed to have been stolen in the Taupo area in November 1999.
The statues were handed to Constable Graeme Adams of the Paeroa police in August, but he has not been able to identify the artist who sculpted them or their owner.
One figure of a mother and child is 40cm high, and the other, a big cat, is 42cm long and 15cm high. They are very heavy.
"I would like to find an owner because if I don't I am going to have to put them into auction," said Constable Adams.
He can be contacted at the Paeroa police station on (07) 862-8744.
